Welcome to high summer. If you had forgotten, this is the season when you complain about how hot it is, completely forgetting that these blue skies and baking pavements were precisely what you longed for in the depths of December. Stay inside? You gotta be kidding!
So. No complaints! Put on strong sunscreen, and enjoy the gorgeous day. Get some exercise, but take it a bit easier during the hot weather, and drink LOTS of water.
Eat well, eat lightly : this is the time to enjoy every fresh fruit and vegetable under the sun, all seasonal and local. Don’t sweat over heavy Sunday dinners, keep it light with salads using organically raised meat or sustainably harvested seafood as a “garnish”, or forgo meat altogether once in a while: think chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, or other complete proteins such as cheese.
Secret: I hate salads too, when they’re made with tasteless iceberg or romaine, and the word “limp” has no place in my vocabulary! I demand something that crunches, resists, contributes assertive flavor. Try fennel bulb – thinly sliced, it adds body and crunch as well as a delectable fresh licorice-y taste to a crisp salad that could also contain, for example, orange sections, black olives (yes) and fresh basil; or maybe peeled and sliced honey crisp apple and toasted pine nuts with lemon thyme from the garden. For dressing, simply arrange the salad on an attractive platter and drizzle some good olive oil and white or red balsamic vinegar over the lot. Fennel – it’s celery with a college education!
Relax and come for bodywork: I start at therapeutic, and go where you please. My space is a place to put aside all ideas of “performance” and “goals” and just BE. For once, just let things happen, feel the sensations, and RECEIVE. Oh, and it’s cool, private and calm here. I think you’ll really enjoy it…
